MY OWN WEBSITE

The website project wasn’t as hard as I thought it would be. Maybe because my teacher did all of the coding for us and we just had to fill in the blanks. During my time at NCCC, I made a website from scratch, placing the codes and links myself and I remember that giving me a headache. Making a website is a lot of work and it takes time and patience. In my opinion, building a house would probably be easier and less stressful.

When I saw the example website that was presented in class, I began to think of a layout I wanted to do. I wanted something that would represent a style of an educated gentleman. I knew I wanted my picture in the middle of my page of off to the left side of the page. I wanted something different than what people usually do. I wanted to stand out. Standing out and doing something different can make people who visits my page, remember my page. I wanted to make my profile picture stand to the left of the page. Normally most people have their profile picture to the right of the page. I just wanted to be different than everybody else. There is nothing wrong with that. I begin to think of cover pictures that I would want to upload and a profile picture. I knew that both pictures needed to be as professional as possible and something that strongly represents me. I immediately thought of a black and white photo I recently took of myself in a suit with a “fashionable” tie. For my cover picture, I chose a picture of myself looking off to the sunset.

Putting a biography lets the web visitors know a little more bit about myself and about my career goals. I just talked about my birth place, my parents, my hometown, and my future plans. I included my educational history (high school and college graduation dates). This could be helpful for any job that would be interested in hiring me just because I took a class or interned somewhere.  Also included on my website is a link for my blog site. Having this can let companies see that I have the ability to create and write a blog and also see that I know how to link websites from one internet page to another. It would have been helpful to have professional social media sites such as Linkin, Facebook and Twitter (considering that is one of the major ways people get their news). That is something that I can work on in the future. Adding those sites is a way that different people can take a deeper look at my scholar work.

This website could be used as newer version of a portfolio. The website had my contact information, which was at the bottom on every web page and on the contact page. The contact information included my email address, phone number, and my social media sites (with links to the only one I had available). The website also included projects that I have did in this class and others. This shows off the work that I can do. I uploaded my resume, posters, and a brochure I created. These images were saved in a .jpg format and in a .pdf format. When I uploaded these images, many of the images were set at weird unusual sizes. Just like indesign and illustrator, holding the shift key and dragging the edge of the picture will move the image size. OR you could go onto the code side of the page and change the size the width and height by entering the correct size that may suit the size of the image. I found this easier than readjusting the image size manually. Another thing I came across while uploading images is that I could add a table (to add images) and delete tables (when I didn’t have any images to add). When uploading these images, you do need to back them up twice to the file that you placed then under. And if you want to have your pictures come up as PDF format once in the web browser, then you need to back it up for the third time.

Now that I made my own website, I can use this as a portfolio to have people view my work and my education history. Since my teacher made this project easy in a way (since all I had to do was just copy and paste links in) I do believe that if I had the website pre-done for me, I can change things up and make it the way I want it to be .

#StopPoliceBrutality

Police Brutality has been such a huge topic in today’s news. With cellphones and recording devices being more accessible than in earlier years, there are more and more recordings of officers violating their authority. Are police officers going to far or are they doing their jobs? Are we being dramatic or are officers need to be controlled? Should officers be charged with murder or should they just get suspended?

Police Brutality has been in exists since the early 19th Century (The Industrial Revolution).  Police Brutality is viewed as a serious offense and is investigated by district attorneys. Police Brutality is defined as the use of any force exceeding that reasonably necessary to accomplish a lawful police purpose. Police Brutality doesn’t just mean physical “excessive force.” An officer can use “excessive force” by using weapons (pepper spray, nerve gas, batons and more importantly guns) to scare or harm people. There have been many cases where police officers use their weapon to intimidate people and it turned deadly. Making a false arrest, be verbally and physically abusive, and corrupt any form of evidence are also examples of police brutality. Many police brutality cases are ignored or tossed to the side considering most of the times police are covering for their federal brothers or sisters. However with many incidents being recorded and making headlines, it’s very hard to ignore such strong accusations.

Since the beginning of the year, there have been 353 cases in the United States involving cases with police brutality. January had 95 cases (the most) and September having 3 (the least). The number of cases, so far, is least compared to last years (623 Cases) and in 2012 (602 cases). Below are 5 cases that happened within the last year.

1.     March 16, 2014: (New Mexico) A homeless man, James Boyd, was holding 2 knives and was in a stand off with officers. James was shot in the back with being 10 feet away and was continued to be shot at once on the ground. The two officers who was involved are going to trial for 2nd murder.
2.     September 14, 2014: (Missouri) An officer deliberately dropped a 17-year-old, Bryce Masters, to the ground. Bryce went into cardiac arrest and went into a induced coma. The officer pleaded guilty to violating the constitutional rights of a minor.
3.     December 6, 2014:  (Colorado) An officer punched a robber who was holding a cell phone. The officer was fired and pleaded guilty to attempted assault in June 2015 and was sentenced to one year probation.
4.     January 28, 2015: (Michigan) Floyd Dent was pulled from his car and beaten by Officer William Melendez and other officers. The officer were accusing Floyd of having possession of cocaine but was later proved innocent. The footage was captured by a bystander and the tape was investigated. Officer William was fired and charge with misconduct while in office, assult with intent to do great bodily harm and assault by strangulation. He is scheduled to go to trial in October 2015. The other officers involved were fired.
5.     April 4 2015: Police Officer Michael Slager shot a man fleeing from a traffic stop, Walter Scott. Michael shot Walter 5 times. Michael was charged with murder.

10 adjectives I would use describing this topic:
  1. Angry
  2. Cruel
  3. Sad
  4. Selfish
  5. Pride
  6. Hurt
  7. Fight
  8. Violence
  9. Destruction
  10. Injustice

For this poster I want to make a bold statement. A poster that will do the following 3 things:
  • Stand out if I was holding it in a crowd.
  • Piss off Police Officers if they see it.
  • Have an impact on how police treat us citizens.
I have two ideas for this assignment. My first idea is I want would want a poster with an all black background. The reason why is because I want my text to be nice and clear to read. I want my text to say FUCK THE POLICE. This saying is taken from the song 8 Ball by N.W.A. This 90’s rap group was known for their notorious lyrics and for their strong lyrics against the police. In the verse, which is famously known, “Take it in a bottle 40, quart or can. Drink it like a madman, yes I do. Fuck the police and a 502.” 502 is code for police officers for drunk driving. Since “FUCK THE POLICE” is extremely vulgar. I would use handcuffs and make the cuffs look like the “U” and “C” in fuck. I would have all the letters in caps and the largest text size. I want the text to take up most of the picture. I would use the chalkboard duster as the text character.

My second idea for this poster, I would use a plain white poster. I would have my text very dark so it looks nice and crisp. I would write all 353 names of the victims involved in the year’s cases with police brutality. The name would be very small and in a font that will be easy to read. I was thinking maybe Franklin Gothic Heavy. I want the names to make a picture of a face of a victim that is nationwide recognized (such as Trayvon Martin, Freedie Grey, Oscar Grey). I got this idea from TLC’s Fan Mail album. The group wrote all of their fans name and the name made a picture of TLC.

Successful Logos

Skinny Girl
This logo shows what the title implies, a skinny girl. This cocktail logo shows a girl in a cocktail attire, drinking. This logo works for this company because of the heart healthy ingredients that are included in every product.

Batman v Superman

The Batman and Superman logo is a strong logo. Both super heroes are iconic and with both logos combined, it equals a powerful dynamic. Both logos are easily identified to which character they go with without any picture of the character or names being included. Catch my drift?

Queen Latifah
This logo of the "Q" shows that this person must be widely known, for a person just to put a letter as their logo. Also the gold goes well with the logo, since gold is of royalty.

BET Network

This logo is an acronym for Black Entertainment Television. That is why all letters are uppercase. I assume that the star is included with logo to give it a reference that music, or celebrities are a main focus with this logo.

The Mr.

My own logo shows a person, that is suppose to represent Mr. Marcus White, standing in a suit smiling. I wanted to refreshen the name "MR" and make it mean a person who is a gentleman and has proper etiquette.

MY OWN LOGO

As shown above, my logo is "MR." It is suppose to be myself representing an educated gentleman with style, class and proper etiquette. I want my own brand of moscato named FORTUNATO MOSCATO. I want people to know that drinking my wine is fun and make them into a sociable person. I want my MR color to be a gold, champaign color. I want to catch the eyes of anyone who loves moscato or any other kind of sweet wine.

Perfect examples of Bros.

Bubble Bee Car Ad

This brochure caught my eye because it reminds me of the “Bubble Bee” car from Transformer. Not even knowing anything about this brochure, I know it’s a sports brochure, by having a car on the front. The front cover is showing the top of the car which is very eye catchy. The picture is taking up most of the entire page, except in the top left and right corner which is white. They used the car tail to use as a center piece for the main title.

For the main title, they used a simple clean font with all upper case. The kerning is very good as there is a very little to no space between each letter. This makes it easy to read. People can skim over it easily and be able to read it without even having to stop and read. For the subtitle which is in the middle of the page, is positioned directly in the middle in a yellow pentagon shape. In the pentagon, the words begin small and get larger as they go down. They used the same exact yellow of the car as the color of the pentagon. In fact, they only used three colors; yellow and black & white. Keeping it simple with only one bright color can work for most brochures and it did for this one.  At the bottom of the page there are two more yellow pentagons, except the pentagons are faded. The holes on the car make the pentagon shape more graphic looking.

Inside the brochure, there is a wide clean picture of how the car looks inside; there are 3 more pentagons however the 3 pentagons are fading as they come across the scene. In the right page they have a small description in a small simple font.

Busy Body Brochure

When I seen this brochure, I absolutely loved it. The cover reminds me of a fashion magazine. The one thing that is negative is that it appears to have too many colors. And it also has many lines going everywhere. When looking at the cover, I’m assuming that this is a graphic design brochure just based off of all the colors and graphic lines. The words are different colors and over lapping each other, which can be a bad thing however if the brochure is about graphics/art/fashion/etc., then this works well. But only if this is for that type of brochure. Most people want to make their brochure colorful to grab people’s attention and they do it all wrong. If people want to make there brochure’s colorful, then I would say follow the example of this. Only make things colorful only when you are discussing about art/fashion.

In the left hand corner at the bottom, there is black text in a medium size font that gives details of what this brochure is about. Underneath is the address in a sky blue color, followed by the colorful logo. Like stated before, this works perfectly since it an art brochure. And the colors go well together. They don’t mismatch. They are all bright, high beam, fun colors that easily go well with each other.

Blending colors together is a hard thing to do. Like stated before when people try to do blend different colors together, it comes out a mess giving viewers a headache to look at.        Normally when doing a brochure, people want to stick to only 2-3 colors. This person decided to 5 colors. I believe this only worked because the colors balanced each other out, they complemented each other. I also believed this worked because they used a blank white page. When I was making my postcard, I made a couple of them and one of them was a bright color postcard with many different colors. I used a bright color green to use in my background with about 8 bright colors used in words and graphics. Just wrong.

Once the brochure, the high bright color scheme tones down as it contains only 3 colors, blue, black and pink. They use the pink to highlight the subtext, they used the blue to indicate main points they want you to know and they use a black color to write the text. They used bright color words to indicate what they want them to remember.

The only thing I would change is the picture placement. They put all 6 of their photos on one page. I would have spread it out among the two pages. Or better yet, I would have put the photos, under each paragraph that the picture is related to.  I would also include a photo caption above or under the photos.

MUST READ: My Postcard BIO

Doing this postcard was a little difficult for in the beginning of the project. You ever begin a project and you find it difficult to begin but then after you finish it, you can do it with your eyes closed. That’s how I felt when I completed this project.

When this project was first posted, I quickly skimmed over the directions and didn’t read it correctly. I thought we had to make a postcard for a state. Since I recently visited Houston, Texas I wanted to use a picture of myself standing next to a palm tree. I thought it would be a perfect picture to show of the nature of Texas. I wanted the poster to some what look like a realistic postcard from Houston, so I googled image search Houston postcards to give me some ideas of what I can do. A lot of postcards had images of the city downtown buildings showing what the city has to often. Other postcards just had Houston in big bright letters, with the state flag. I grew fantasied with that. I begin to sketch out some ideas that I could do. My first sketch was designed in the state flags. My second sketch was juts a regular postcard with a sideways triangle on the side. In the triangle I was going to make the colors of the Texas flag with my picture on the outside.

I went back to google to see what writing was on most of the post cards, it was mostly “greetings from” in a soft cursive font. I decided to go about my idea. I opened Illustrator and clicked on the rectangle tool and changed it to the polygon tool. I had to change the number of sides from 6 to 3. I click on the blank page to make my triangle. Since Texas state colors, are blue, white, and red; I wanted to make my triangle those 3 colors. I use the color swatch tool and use the gradient tool to blend the tools together.

I went back to looking at Texas postcards and seen that there state shape is a star. I decided to make a star and use the 3 colors in the star instead of the triangle. I then went into Indesign to finally begin my postcard. Since I was writing about Houston, I wanted my font to be something that would be used for a cowboy movie. I used Rosewood std at 92 font. I made it large enough that the word Houston would reach one end to the other. I used the same font character to write Texas but I made the size a little smaller. I then inserted the star I made from Illustrator and place two of them on the side of the word Texas. For “Greetings From” I used Brush Script Std. font at 44 font size. I also slanted it at a 16 degree angle. Since this was a “Houston” postcard, I wanted to include the picture of me with the palm tree so I then clicked open Photoshop to crop my picture. When I went back to the directions, I read that we had to do a biography postcard (don’t know how I miss that) which really upset me because I just spent 3 hours on this postcard. With everything I did was wrong, I was back to square one.

With the Houston post card 90% completed, I figured I’ll just change the words to my name and add a biography. I changed Houston to my name using the same font and size. I then couldn’t use the star I had made so I then just made a swirly circle in Illustrator. I saved that as an eps. file to place it on Indesign. I had a brown background for my Houston postcard and that color didn’t suite me. I changed the color to a light blue blending to white. I then look at the picture of me and didn’t like it as biography picture of me. I went to look for a more professional  picture of myself. I uploaded a picture to Photoshop and changed the resolution to 300, crop out all the extra stuff and saved it as a tiff file. Once I uploaded it to Indesign the picture was very blurry. Wasn’t sure why because I did every step correctly. I did this for 3 other photos and they were also blurry so I just stuck with my palm tree photo. With sticking to the palm tree photo, I notice I had a white box around my picture that I couldn’t get rid of no matter what I did in Photoshop so I felt as if I couldn’t use a color background.

Since the box around my photo wouldn’t go away, I worked with it. I used a white background so my picture could stand out. Since my postcard needed a lot of colors, I decided to use many colorful shapes and lines. I made 4 color triangles in illustrator and added them. I made 6 lines going diangle. I then separated my biography and placed them in 4 different boxes. I made the boxes colorful. I went back into Illustrator to make another circler swiler thing. When I was finished, my work looked like a drag queen show.

When brought to class, my teacher didn’t like it and said the postcard would receiver a failing grade. I had to change everything. My teacher taught me how to get rid of white box. I got rid of the box, edit my picture a little bit more to where you can only see me and the palm tree and no background image. I then took away every colorful design (the color boxes, the lines, the multiple triangles). I made a light lime green color background. I kept all my font characters and sizes.

TERRIBLE POSTERS

New Praise Temple

Looking at the poster, I see many different faces on the poster which gives me a warm feeling; however there are too many faces on the poster being cut out of by the designed lines. Also some pictures overlap some. There is space at the bottom of the poster where they could put the pictures at instead of overlapping pictures. Under the title, it says Join Us and it appears to be both two different sizes. The font makes the letters seem very thin and you can’t read it. Also throughout the poster there are 5 different types of fonts. The sparklers between the two couples at the bottom of the page could have been moved from between them and moved to underneath the main title. Or they could have put many sparklers around the title to bring more attention to the title. I actually just noticed that where the man is standing, there are words that are being cut off. This is an extremely bad edit. The man shoes are also cut off. I know how he is leaning over, it is made to look as if he is leaning on the title but they could have moved the title over a little bit over so that they words wouldn’t be cut off. I don’t understand why his shoes are cut off. You can see the outline of his shoes only.

Take it by the Youth Conference

This poster is extremely hard to read. The poster is extremely washed out and it looks as if it is very old. I’m not sure if the creator had wanted the poster to look this way. With the poster being faded, the text on the poster is very hard to read. The text color is white and the background picture has black and white coloring. The words look blended with the background. In the middle of the poster, the background is red and the text is also red. The two colors should not be used together. Also with the date being on the top, it is not fitted on the page. They tried to make it crocked and fancy when they made it off of the page. If they wanted to do that, they could have made it work by turning the date to the side of the page. When reading the box, the title of the box says “Rehearsal” which is spelled terribly wrong. It also does not give any detail of what the event is about. The poster has a lot of empty space. They could have either made the font bigger to take up room, the subtitle should not be bigger than the main title, which it looks it. The color of the text should have been a darker color to be with that background. If I could change this up I would take the title and make big that that is reaches both ends of the paper. I then would make the name of the church and the address smaller but it would match the size the time.  The subtitle I would do the same as the main title, have it big enough it would reach both sides. Now moving to the middle of the poster, I would change the color from red to maybe a yellow or orange. The red the person put up is terrible. It looks like dried up blood. The text in the box would be red instead of the dark orange it is now. The picture would be a lot bigger. I would have the edge of the picture would reach close to the text. The picture would also be more slanted. I know I discuss how much I hate the background but I would change the background to a different music background.

Worship Without Walls

This poster is very plain and boring. This flier does give too much detail of what the event is about.  This poster just has the title and the date of the event with no description. There is a lot of blank space on the poster which could be used for a small description of the event. In the description they could have if it is free or not, where the event is being held, and the time of the event. None of that is on the poster which is crazy. Instead of using a large picture they could have used a small picture with more details. The title has an error in it. It says “1st Annual” which is incorrect grammar. There can be no 1st Annual, because you don’t know if there will be another event the following year. I would recommend a small font and a smaller image. If I were to change this I would keep the font of all of the text. I think that the text is large and fancy enough to catch a person’s eye. However I would have the mirror effect of the main title and have the title falling in the background. I would then add a couple of twinkling stars around the title. I don’t know why but the twinkling stars can make an event seem classer. As stated before there is no such thing as a “1st Annual” event according to AP Stylebook 2014. That doesn’t even make sense as it is. So that would be taken out. I would add a logo or slogan to the pictures, to fill in the extra space. I would also change the background to a brighter color. The dark red color darkens the photo to the point where it makes the event seem dull and boring. Since the woman’s shirt is black and white, I would do a bright color background like a yellow color. The yellow will be warm and welcoming. And there is suppose to be a Christian event, the red background indicates the devil. Also since this is a religious event, why not add an angel or a halo. I think that would bring more of a warming feeling. I love boarders so I would add a blackboard around the poster. The boarder I would do will be a thick boarder with a thin boarder following it. It might look too professional but it will give it some type of fun look to it. I said it before that there’s no details of the event so that is a must to add. But since the person picture is so big, I would add a small description of her saying why she is a guest speaker and a little bio about her. I would put her bio in a fancy box with a font size and color that would be easy to see.

HALLOWEEN

This poster is also boring. There is only one image that is used, for an event that is supposed to be used for I’m assuming for trick and treating. The font size looks like they used the normal text size. They didn’t use any spooky or fun fonts that would make kids want to come to their event. They have listed free candy, hotdogs and donuts being there so they could have posted some pictures of all things or two of food. The pumpkin background picture gives it a formal look and not a Halloween theme. Having a different background such; as a spooky pumpkin or children playing with pumpkins. Also they put any text across the pumpkins which gave a lot of empty space. There they could have added more text such as:

            -how much food will cost

            -who is the main public

-the year should be on here just incase the letter never gets taken down

            -the zip code and city

I also think that a little description of two locations. It doesn’t say what place of establishment the two places are. If I were to redo this poster, everything would be redone! Okay lets get started. So as said before the background of the 3 pumpkins is just too boring. There needs to be something spooky and scary since it’s a Halloween theme event. I would want whatever background I choose to be black, to give it a spooky theme. I would want to maybe have a glow-in-the-dark pumpkin with scary teeth. I would then use the chalkboard font with the duster effect with the title. The font is a very fun font. (Safe Night Out is the title I’m referring to) Underneath the title I would put in the regular chalkboard font, “Presented by Buffalo United Front, House of Masters and East Delavan Block Club.” I then would put the date of the event titled to the side from 6pm-9pm. If they wanted to put dusk (which they did) I would look up the time the sun usually sets around the time of the event. People with busy schedules want the exact time the function will begin and the same for when the function will end. Like stated before I would add pictures of kids, but I would add pictures of kids who have on a mask and who is trick or treating. I would add two photos (3 at the most). Then I would list the food that would be available with probably pictures or icons. Since this is a children’s event, parents would like to know prices of things, so I would give one price followed by the word “up.” (ex. Prices start at $4 and up) I see two logos at the top of the page; I would put those at the bottom of the page. I almost forgot the most important thing the address. I would put the address across from the date slated.

Trinity District

Looking at the poster gave me a headache. The background picture is too many different colors. It’s a memorizing picture of a space however it doesn’t belong on a poster because you can not properly read the words on the poster. If they wanted to do use this background then they could have used last words on this flier. However since they did use this background, I would suggest them using a solid color. Or they could have used a black color picture. With the black background, there’s chance that it would be easier to read, especially with the white color text. I also would take away some text because I feel like a lot of text could be removed. If they wanted to use that text, there is open space in the middle of the flier that could have been filled. I suggested for some text to be taken off because since there is so much text, the text size is small to read. They could take away the bible quote, the large logo and shrink the dates of the events, to as smaller font. The pictures all the guest speakers could have been colored photos instead of black and white. The black and white doesn’t make the photos pop out of the poster. Instead it blends the pictures in the mess background. If I were to change this up, I would keep most of the font. The font does stand out to everyone. I however would change the background of the poster to something that isn’t so distracting. The galaxy is not a good background picture. Its just way to much. Since there is so much information on this poster, there needs to be a solid color. Or they could have found an image that displays to the side or middle such as a cross, or a picture of Jesus,” Since they have a woman who image is larger than the others, they could have taken her image and made it the main background. They could have put it to either side of the poster or in the middle. Wherever they decide to put the image, I would put a small description on her. I would change the font to a color that would be easy to read. If they really wanted the scripture, I would condense the size and make it small. Its too big and it takes up too much room. I would have the dates of the event to the side of the page along the left side of the page. In the middle of the poster I would put the location. Now to the people at the bottom, there pictures need to be in color instead of black and white. If they wanted their pictures to stay black and white then the main lady shouldn’t be in color. Everyone needs to stay the same.

What makes a poster good and bad?

Well Designed Posters

Knock Around Guys

The first thing that stands out to me is the picture of the 7 people with a picture of a ruined downtown. The picture of 7 individuals are the hosts (whose names are above) and the picture is perfectly fit all of them. It seems like they are all “evenly” placed on the flier, with an even distance between everyone. They all seemed to wear a black color (except 1) which helps balance out the picture. The poster seems to use only two different fonts which makes the poster so easy to read. The title of the flier is in a 3D setting which stands out the most. They have neatly listed the host, the photographer who’ll be at the event, all of the DJ’s and number to call if you want to book a table. The poster includes multiple logos that you can clearly see neatly placed.

The more I look at the poster, the more details I notice. The background picture is of a city that is in ruins. It reminds me of a end of the world movie. That can be symbolized or taken that the party they are having will cause damage, which is a sign of fun. Or the background could mean that the world will soon be ending so party before the world ends. Either way it is a super dope picture and fits well with the poster. The date of the event is eye catching. For the year 2013, they have 2K13. Not many people put “K” in the year. That’s a way to connect to the younger crowd. The line that divides the poster, works out. Its an extremely thin line and its blends in with the buildings in the background. It’s not a normal line. Its very different and unique. The poster includes 7 different logos and they manage all of the logos on one page. They made all the logos black and white and transparent so the building in the background will be clear. The only logo that is not the same is the Best Western logo. The only reason I could think that is, because that’s where the event is taking place. Since its in regular color, it stands out which makes people know where the event is taking place. Underneath the logo is directions which should be on every poster with an event. Many people don’t have a smart phone that has GPS on it.

Father's Day Poster

This poster gets its point across as soon as you look at it. Its main title is used with the largest font on the page. When looking from top to bottom of the flier, you can’t miss the sponsor that is spread out with 3 of the sponsor images. Besides the title standing out, my eye was attracted to the four photos that are also on the page. The four pictures are pictures of food on the grill and different family having fun with each other. The food pictures place in my mind that food will be available and that games would be available for my family to enjoy. The subtitle “Father’s Day Cookout” is in a circle shape which is shaping the outline of the text. In the text they have two different color background (sky blue and white). This works very well because the text of the words are the opposite of whatever the background is. The text is easy to read while each text is in all caps.

The more I look at the flier the more details I see. There are 6 perfectly even squares at the bottom of the poster. In each square, they put the event details. They used 3 different colors to add more “funk” to the poster (Blue, White and Black). They all work well together. I never thought that those 3 colors would work well with each other. I noticed that they indicate that the cookout is free. They made it yellow (which is the only thing that is yellow on the page). Since it’s the only thing yellow it stands out the most. That’s what the people look for when they look on posters. They used the saying “Annual” in the correct format. As I continued to look at the poster, I see that the main background is a flower setting which is perfect since this is an outdoor event. The flower setting indicates that the sun will be shinning, it’s going to take place in a park and that it will be a nice playful event. Flowers are a sign of warming people up. After every word is many exclamation points. This makes people more excited about the event. At the top of the flier they remind you that this event happened before by saying “It’s that time of year again.”

5th Anniversary Celebration

I found this poster to be the third best because it displays four people who will be honoring a person. Its not a very simple poster. The images on the poster are all neatly placed. It doesn’t even look as if the photo were Photoshoped, and is neatly placed. The main title is a good size to where you can read it from a far. The person who is being honor named has a mirror effect which shows from behind. The effect goes well with the twinkle effect in the background. The purple background gives off a rich feeling and the gold cross works well with that. Each person who is being a guest speaker had a small description of when they going to be performing. At the top of the poster, they remind you that this event has been done several times in the past by making the fifth bigger then the other fonts. A fifth event is a big number and they emphasize it by making the number five bigger than the time. All of the photos of the people are in color. None of the pictures are filtered to black and white or any other filter. Everyone has the exact same glow and everyone has the same pose (meaning everyone is smiling). The background colors match with what the people in the picture is wearing. The cursive font and the people in the picture dressing formal indicate that it will be a formal event.

Barbershop

This poster used three basic colors (red, white, and blue) and it was done for an holiday event. The main title is red and transparent with the picture in the background, which is someone with a fresh hair cut. The date of the event is in a blue ribbon and the title is positioned evenly directly below. The top of the flier is multiple lines of color which send your eyes to the information below. When looking immediately at the poster, my eyes look at the four pictures on the poster which is surrounded by a blue line box. All the blue line boxes are the same size and are all placed evenly together. The date in the ribbon makes it seem like it is a special type of gift that makes you want to open the invitation. The time under the date has a red line below. The red can indicate final decision or no changing.

As stated before it is always good to have directions on an event poster. This poster has the address and even includes a map of the surrounding areas so people can have an ideal image of the whereabouts. The poster includes what is included in the event. They list prices, tell if there is going to be food and drink and also says its going to be a gift bags handed out.

Terrible Poster

New Praise Temple

Looking at the poster, I see many different faces on the poster which gives me a warm feeling; however there are too many faces on the poster being cut out of by the designed lines. Also some pictures overlap some. There is space at the bottom of the poster where they could put the pictures at instead of overlapping pictures. Under the title, it says "Join Us" and it appears to be both two different font sizes. The font makes the letters seem very thin and you can’t read it. Also throughout the poster there are a total of five different types of fonts. Every poster should have up-to two or three font changes. Also each font change should be somewhat related to the others.

The sparklers between the two couples at the bottom of the page could have been moved from between them and moved to underneath the main title. Or they could have put many sparklers around the title to bring more attention to the title. In my opinion that sparkle doesn't look right in between them. I actually just noticed that where the man is standing, there are words that are being cut off. This is an extremely terrible edit. The man shoes are also cut off. I understand that his stance is made to look as if he is leaning on the title but they could have moved the title over a little bit over so that they words wouldn’t be cut off. I don’t understand why his shoes are cut off. You can see the outline of his shoes only. Maybe where they edited the picture in photoshop, there was something on his shoes that would have messed up the picture.

Take it by the Youth Conference

This poster is extremely hard to read. The poster is extremely washed out and it looks as if it is very old. I’m not sure if the creator had wanted the poster to have this  look. Not sure what the purpose was of this. With the poster being faded, the text on the poster is very hard to read. The text color is white and the background picture has black and white coloring. The words look blended with the background. In the middle of the poster, the background is red and the text is also red. The two colors should not be used together. Also with the date being on the top, it is not fitted on the page. They tried to make it crooked and fancy when they made it off of the page. If they wanted to do that, they could have made it work by turning the date to the side of the page. When reading the box, the title of the box says “Rehearsal” which is spelled terribly wrong.

This poster does not give any detail of what the event is about. The poster has a lot of empty space which could of been filled by details of the event. They could also have either made the font bigger to take up room. However the subtitle should not be bigger than the main title, which it looks it is. The color of the text should have been a darker color to be with that background.

If I could change this up I would take the title and the titles reach both ends of the paper. I then would make the name of the church and the address smaller but it would match the size the time.  The subtitle of the poster I would do the same as the main title, have it big enough it would reach both sides.

Just like the flier above, this does give too much detail of what the event is about.  This poster just has the title and the date of the event with no description. There is a lot of blank space on the poster which could be used for a small description of the event. In the description they could have if it is free or not, where the event is being held, and the time of the event. None of that is on the poster which is crazy if this person is interested in bringing in a certain type of audience. Instead of using a large picture they could have places a couple of small pictures to try to give off details in the picture.

The title has an error in it that many people tend to make. I would then add a couple of twinkling stars around the title to give the poster some type of design.

This is supposed to be a Christian event, the red background indicates the devil (to me). And since this is a religious event, why not add an angel or a halo or even a cross. I think that would bring more of a warming feeling. I'm a boarders lover so I would add a blackboard around the poster. The boarder I would do will be a thick boarder with a thin boarder following it. It might look too professional but it will give it some type of fun look to it rather than nothing. I said it before that there’s no details of the event so that is a must to add. But since the person picture is so big, I would add a small description of  why she is a guest speaker and a little bio about herself. I would put her bio in a fancy box with a font size and color that would be easy to see.

HALLOWEEN

From reading this, this is supposed to be a fun event but this poster is boring. It doesn't give off fun. There is only one image that is used, for an event that is supposed to be used for trick and treating.

Not trying to sound mean. Okay lets get started. So as said before the background of the three pumpkins is just too boring.

If they wanted to do use this background then they could have used less words on this flier. However since they did use this background, I would suggest them using a solid color. Or they could have used a black color picture. With the black background, there’s a higher chance that it would be easier to read, especially with the white color text. I also would take away some text because I feel like a lot of text could be removed. If they wanted to use that text, there is open space in the middle of the flier that could have been filled. I suggested for some text to be taken off because since there is so much text, the text size is small to read and a lot of it is unnecessary.
